Volcano Vista isn't ready to depart with the 5A State Trophy Just Yet

Questions about whether Volcano Vista would be able to stay a contender after a few graduations were certainly put to rest when they captured a huge win at the Academy Extravaganza over Rio Rancho and Cleveland. Yes, the Hawks with lead by Thomas Croshaw and Orion Chavez have found themselves once again in the driver's seat heading into this weekend's contest. Despite what appeared to be a hefty victory at Extravaganza a few weeks ago, the Rams proved to be the better of the two on their home course not only for Rio Rancho Jamboree but again last weekend at the District 1-5A meet. So which victory is more indicative of what will play out this weekend, well we'll have to wait a few more days to find out. On paper, this matchup is even closer with only one point determining the separation between Volcano Vista and Rio Rancho. Cleveland takes a further step back but remains just as potent as ever to land on the podium this year. They will need to watch out for Eldorado which is right on their hips and even a more unknown presence with Alamogordo which has shown to be quite versatile.  Sandia's Steven West has looked invincible this season and has managed to get the better of Thomas Croshaw on every occasion thus far. As to be expected of the defending champion of 5A, however, Croshaw has come into his own of late including a personal best set at Extravaganza. This race may be closer than we expect and also around will be Organ Mountain duo Jeron Wisner and Corbin Coombs that have traded off as their top runners for the Knights all year long. Plenty of notable names to watch out for in this 5A race and you can check them out below!
