Rams over Hawks to Take 2022 5A State Title
After trading off victories all season long, it was the Rams of Rio Rancho that would end up hoisting the blue state championship trophy on a perfect Saturday in November. The pre-season #1 Rams had plenty to prove in 2022, ending a drought that lasted over seven years since their last state title. Defending champs were not so easily detoured to let district rivals get the best of them without a true battle from their scoring five. Both the Rams and Hawks were able to land three runners in the top ten and despite the Rams landing all of their scorers in the top 13 finishers the final tally would be only a four-point margin of victory. Collyn Tomoyose would lead his team with a 5th-place finish while runner-up Hawks got their best effort from Thomas Croshaw who took it down to the wire with the defending champion, Steven West. West would pull away with a phenomenal 15:04 to return to the top of boys 5A.
