State Championship Results I Photos I Video I3A Girls Recap
Zuni was one of many teams that were unfortunately unable to compete last year with Covid precautions. The season prior they were on a roll as they won the 2019 3A championship with 23 points as Kameron Eustace just a sophomore at the time led them behind his 4th place performance. Fast forward to 2021 as Zuni had been looking excellent this entire season and the real question was going to be how they fare on this new championship course amongst defending champions Cottonwood Classical and an improved Tohatchi squad. With their whole community watching they pulled yet another impressive win with the most lively crowd of the day as they roared each of their runners down the final stretch. Tohatchi was able to hold on for state-runner-up performance with Melvin Scott's individual championship title when he and Eustace sprinted down the final 100m with a few hundreds of a second separating them. They would hug it out showing true sportsmanship throughout a race to remember. Cottonwood Classical would remain on the podium for the second time in 2021 with Maximo Brito them to 111 points over Newcomb's 112 points.
Melvin Scott and Kameron Eustace went 1-2 both in 16:35 the closest finish between individuals all day. Lance Miller would remain among the top 5 as he did in the spring state meet, he would capture 3rd place in 16:50. Devin Lansing representing Navajo Prep on his own would make them proud with his 4th place finish in 17:14. Alec Lastyano contributed to Zuni's championship performance behind his 5th place finish.
