New Mexico's Getting To Know: Aubrey Lozoya

Aubrey Lozoya

A two-time all-state cross country runner for Cottonwood Classical, Aubrey Lozoya has been a consistent force among 3A girls and is nearing the state championships as a contender in multiple events. Today we get to know more about her in our New Mexico's Getting To Know Series.

When did you first start competing in track and field, and do you recall any of your childhood competitions?

I first started competing in my freshman year! I didn't interact in a sport when I was younger, but I did run a lot with my friends!

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?

The moment when I realized that I was able to compete at such a high level was when I worked hard in the Rio rancho jamboree, and then state came and my first year made me crave more success.

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?

I sometimes would compare myself to others, and that would bring me down a lot because I wasn't focusing on myself. I worked on myself and I was able to overcome that bump on the road

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?

Wearing masks was a big surprise when it came to sports. I thought I was going to give up but I fought hard and got used to wearing a mask in hot weather!

If you had to pick: Track and Field or Cross Country, and why?

Cross country! I like cross country more because it is more of a team sport. I love running the unique courses and I love the overall vibes of the sport. My team makes me feel at home.

How is the college recruiting process going, and what schools are you looking at?

It is going well I think! I've gotten letters from universities and I am still looking for a college to go to.

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?

I'm looking at UNM at the moment because I like to stay near home. I'm still a little unsure at the moment

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?

I really wish I could sprint the 100 and the 200. Seeing how my friends sprint those events make it seem so fun. Its definitely a change from distant events.

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?

I love to paint and overall relax for some recovery before I have my next practice.

Who is your role model, and why?

I would say Ariana Grande is my overall role model because she taught me so much over the past few years. But I would also like to say my teammates Liza Cardinale and Sophia Lopez because they help me become the best version of myself and help me push myself.

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of the things on your list!

I definitely want to spend more time with my best friends over the summer, run in new locations, and eat a lot of watermelon!

What is the best advice you have received?

The best advice was when my mom told me not to be afraid of change, and that change is good to help us move on. She told me to not be afraid of what I am capable of, and that going fast is great and it's meant to be fun.

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?

PASTA!! I always eat pasta before a race and as well as toast. As a pre-race snack, I eat fruit and granola to keep me energized:)

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?

When I was younger, I always wanted to swim and compete with the boys in my swimming class. I always liked swimming for a while, so I think that if I didn't do Track and XC, I would have gone for swimming.
