Adriana Tatum

Someone that should really need no introduction at this point, one of the greatest sprinters in New Mexico's history, Adriana Tatum. She has piled up her fair share of state titles and will seek even more to add to her legacy as we find out more about her in our Getting to Know New Mexico Athletes Series.

When did you first start competing in track and field, and do you recall any of your childhood competitions?

I started competing in 6th grade and I remember never using starting blocks in any of my races even through I definitely should have.

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?

I think it was at my first varsity meet of my freshman year and at this meet there was an elite 100 where each school puts there fastest runner in that race and my coach decided to put me in it.

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?

I would say some bumps are trying to master different aspects of different races to cut down on time.

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?

It made harder to find places to train because everything was closed and it changed when we would usually have our season which kind of threw me off because I'm used to starting track in March instead of May.

What is your favorite track venue that you have competed at?

My favorite track venue is the Richard Harper track at Albuquerque Academy it's the best.

How is the college recruiting process going, and what schools are you looking at?

It's been good I've already committed.

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?

I have committed to Arizona State University because it was the perfect fit for me.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?

I wish I was good at pole vault because I think I would be so cool to be able to launch yourself over at such crazy heights.

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of Track and Field?

I do like painting from time to time.

Who is your role model, and why?

My mom because she is so strong, resilient, and works hard for everything and everyone in her life. I hope to be half the women she is one day.

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of the things on your list!

To go to Paris, see the Eiffel Tower and go to the Lourve.

What is the best advice you have received?

Be humble because your gift can always be taken away from you.

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?

I don't really have a tradition but I do like have an orange or something small before my race.

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?

I would want to gymnastics because I think I would so cool to be able to do all those crazy flips.
