James Jenkins
Coming into the season, James was relatively unknown and thus far has proven to be a likely contender in the 4A sprints and high jump. The undefeated husky holds the state lead in the 200m with a 22.03 and one of only four to have jumped 6'4" in the high jump this season. Today we find out more about 2021's breakout star James Jenkins in our New Mexico's Getting To Know Series.
When did you first start competing in track and field, and do you recall any of your childhood competitions?
I started when I was 4 years old. The only thing i can remember from when i competed was having to tie my shorts really tight because they would always fall down.
Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?
Not really it just sort of came slowly as I got older.
What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?
Not anything in specific but there is always little injuries as the season goes on.
How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?
Having to wear a mask makes it hard to run for a long time without getting super tired. Other than that just the restrictions and places I can be to train.
If you had to pick: Track and Field or Cross Country, and why?
I would pick track because I have been a sprinter my whole life and haven't really considered cross country.
How is the college recruiting process going, and what schools are you looking at?
Going slower than expected but I think as I go into my senior year it will open up a bit more.
Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?
Not committed
Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?
No, I'm happy with the events I do.
What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?
Mostly football. I'm either always training for track or football.
Who is your role model, and why?
My dad because of how hard he worked to accomplish things in his life.
Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of the things on your list!
Traveling the world
What is the best advice you have received?
There's always someone better than you, but that doesn't mean they are working harder than you.
What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?
Listening to music and eating cheez its.
If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?
Maybe swimming because it is similar to track but takes a different skill set.
