New Mexico's Getting To Know: Tessa Holderman

One of the breakout stars of 2021 includes Rio Rancho's Tessa Holderman who got her feet wet during a short cross country season claimed a 3rd place finish at the New Mexico 5A State Cross Country Championships. So far this track season has been one of the top distance runners in the state in events from 800m - 3200m. Today we find out more about Tessa's interests, experiences, and motivations that guide her to success.

When did you first start competing in track and field, and do you recall any of your childhood competitions?

I first started competing In Track and field this year and I am a former goal keeper I've always loved running but could never compete I. Track because of soccer season but COVID gave me the perfect opportunity to join in!

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?

Yes, after the first 3200m race at the Rio Rancho Rust-buster meet. I had no clue what I was doing but I was stoked to get to run fast!

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?

Learning to love the 2nd lap of an 800m race and staying alive through the last 100. I've definitely improved my kick a lot this season.

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?

It gave me time to run and cleared off the rest of my schedule so I could run even more. Honestly, besides the masks, it's been great.

If you had to pick: Track and Field or Cross Country, and why?

Cross country because when you compete and the pain sets in you know that there's a whole team behind you working just as hard for you, as you are working for them.

How is the college recruiting process going, and what schools are you looking at?

I'm committed to run xc/T&F at Abilene Christian University!

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?

Abilene Christian university because they compete at a high level and the team environment is one of the best I've ever seen. You can tell the culture is important to them.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?
Hurdling, it looks fun. Oh or pole vault!

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?

I like backpacking, gardening, playing guitar, and quoting Michael Jordan.

Who is your role model, and why?

My brother Macen because he always was persistently optimistic and never complained. He was diagnosed with cancer at 15 and passed away at 17 but in his own words "at least it wasn't a** cancer". His example of grit is something I will always strive to match throughout my own life.

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of the things on your list!

Sub 3 hour marathon, become fluent in Spanish, and can't die without hanging out with Guy Fieri in Flavortown!

What is the best advice you have received?

The only things in life you can control are your effort, attitude, and reaction. You dictate your experiences in life through changing them.

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?

Listening to the real slim shady by Eminem

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?

Gymnastics. That's just straight-up cool!
