New Mexico's Getting To Know: Cebastian Marquez

Cebastian Marquez

A program veteran among Rio Rancho, Cebastian Marquez has progressed to be one of the staples of the distance boys. Marquez found his best cross country season this past spring with winning a district 1-5A meet before a 5th place finish at the 5A State Cross Country Championships. This track season he has emerged as a contender in the 3200m with his first sub 10:00 performance coming in early May at the Cleveland Invite. Find out Cebastian's interests, motivations and what the future holds for the Rio Rancho Ram senior in our Getting To Know Series.

When did you first start competing in track and field, and do you recall any of your childhood competitions?

I started competing in 8th grade

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?

It was probably my Junior year when I had a pretty good race at Cleveland

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?

Motivation was probably one, throughout COVID there have been times when I felt I wasn't gonna be able to do it, but my team, coach, and family kept me going.

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?

Covid only effected my motivation, other than that I just continued to train with my team throughout the pandemic.

If you had to pick: Track and Field or Cross Country, and why?

I would choose cross country because it is a race of guts and strategy, and whoever can push themselves the hardest for the longest amount of time will win

How is the college recruiting process going, and what schools are you looking at?

I have signed to run for Fort Lewis next year

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?

I'm going to Fort Lewis and I have already signed, I choose them because their in the mountains, it's a small school, and not to far from home.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?

If I had to choose javelin because it looks cool

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?

I think games like darts, chess, stuff like that. Camping and being outside.

Who is your role model, and why?

I think I would say Prefontaine because of his view of running, he viewed it as an art and that when you give it your all you can overcome anything

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of the things on your list!

Skydive, meet someone famous, drive a sports car, sail a boat, visit somewhere cool outside the US

What is the best advice you have received?

Consistency is key

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?

Putting my hair into the man bun

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?

Basketball because it's fun
