Past state championship results would not really tell the complete story of the #10 Piedra Vista squad that has an abundance of talent worthy of being a top-five team among 5A. Making it out of an always competitive district 2-5A has proven a challenge in recent years where it is almost certain that teams like Eldorado and La Cueva nab the top two spots. While it has been a plug and switch between Sandia, Farmington, and Piedra Vista for the final state qualifying spot it appears this season would be the Panther's chance to capitalize on it. They return one of the more experienced squads in New Mexico with Mackenzie Yazzie being the lone state qualifier from last season with a 24th place finish. They also return Riley Wilson (54th in 2020), Lauren Harris (93rd in 2019), and Nicole Pierce (45th in 2020). Other returning varsity runners include Naomi Wagoner, Shishawna Begay, and Emily Beyale. In truly what has been a sport of patience and perseverance, Piedra Vista with a squad full of athletes that have been on the big stage before may be primed to finally compete as a team once again for some hardware on the line.
