Week in Review: September 9 - 15

We're missing results from a lot of last weekend's meets, but we'll do a brief dissection of the highlights of the meets for which we do have results. Fasten your seatbelts, and here we go...

Albuquerque High School XC Invitational

Carisma Lovato and Austin Anaya take the individual titles. Moriarty's Anaya is already something of a known quantity. It's probably safe to say we're about to learn a good deal more about Valencia's Lovato in the next few weeks.

It's worth noting that the Clovis girls made the trip and took some extra hardware home with them to offset to weight of the gas burned along the way. Sandia ran away with boys honors.

Liberty Bell Cross Country Invitational

Albuquerque Academy was the lone New Mexico representative at this storied meet this season. The Chargers fared well, but didn't extend their list of winnings at this meet, finishing fifth among boys and 10th among girls in the Division 1 races.

Sporting bib #1 (definitely something to be stored and away and saved) from this meet, Claire Archibeck ran 18:49 on a speed-enhanced 5K to finish 14th. Blaise Mariner made a bit of a splash on the scene by finishing first among AA boys with a time of 16:18. As you try to digest these times, remind yourselves that there is no sand to negotiate on the Liberty Bell course. It is truly more of a road race than a cross country race.

What to Make of Liberty Bell?

In my experience, Tucker Hamilton is not a run-from-the-front kind of guy, but it may be that Liberty Bell plays differently in some runners' psyches than other meets. Photo by Mark Weeks.

Colter's Run

Everything pointed to a great afternoon racing at Liberty Bell, but nobody could have predicted Jordyn Colter crushing the course record with a 17:01. Photo by Lyle Knudson.

Liberty Bell 2012 Preview

While the Liberty Bell course qualifies as tame on just about every count, things are never tame from the report of the starter's pistol to the finish of the race. Photo by Jeff McCoy.

Shiprock Cross Country Invitational

On-Site Coverage

It's a big meet in a wide open piece of the countryside. Wingate's girls edged the Navajo Prep girls by a single point. Keep that result in mind as the season moves along. Shiprock's boys had no trouble dispatching the rest of the field. Individual titles to Binahni Curley of Window Rock (AZ) for the boys and Tanaya Belone of Wingate for the girls.
