New Mexico Cross Country Countdown Series
#2 Cleveland Storm
Should we really have any doubt that Cleveland is always a contender when it comes to the 5A state championship? The Storm coming off a 3rd place finish in 2021 has found a way once again to reload the arsenal of talent they have in their junior varsity/C teams to find athletes that can manage their own on the big stage and pull off great performances. They will be asked once again to fill those graduating spots as they have four state runners back in 2022. Caden Nunn will lead the Storm as he comes off a 9th place finish to earn All-State honors. Also returning are Vince Madalena (19th in 2021), Colin Ross (38th in 2021), and Santiago Armijo (60th in 2021). Last year May have been the golden moment for Volcano Vista as they captured their first state championship trophy but the defending champs will once again have Cleveland on their heels this season. Also certainly can't be understated that this district also includes Rio Rancho which may just see their best squads in recent years toeing the line for their piece of 5A. With so many possibilities and a season-long test of each squad's capabilities, the only certainty is that Cleveland will be just as competitive as they've always been.
