#3 Volcano Vista Hawks
The wait finally paid off Volcano Vista last season as they were able to claim their first 5A state title in school history while getting to do so alongside the girls' team for a joyous sweep of Class 5A. Now they will seek to defend that title despite a trio of graduates, the Hawks remain a potent squad to hold on to the top of 5A. Thomas Croshaw returns coming off an 11th-place finish to lead his team this season. Also back are Orion Chavez (14th in 2021), Jude Lucero (29th in 2021), and Stoney Cuthen (32nd in 2021). A solid returning cast for the Hawks along with some rising underclassmen in Cruz Sanchez, Dominic Velasquez, and Chris Gomez. Volcano Vista will run into another challenge with both Rio Rancho and Sue Cleveland relentlessly holding on to the top spots in New Mexico. The Hawks bring back enough to stay in the mix as they continue to remain the team to beat in 2022.
