New Mexico Boys Cross Country Countdown: #7 ABQ Academy

New Mexico Cross Country Countdown Series

The New Mexico Cross Country Countdown breaks down the top 25 New Mexico boys and girls teams returning this fall. These rankings will include projected top runners and weigh how each team may do in their respective districts and state competitions. Changes to class alignments and adaptions to the state championship format have been taken into consideration. These rankings are based on the past season of performances. All top returning runners are only projections and may include athletes no longer on the team due to transfer or out-of-state relocation.

#7 ABQ Academy Chargers

After several years of finding themselves in rebuild mode, might this be the year for ABQ Academy to once again be on top of 4A over rival Los Alamos? The #7 ranked Chargers return a plethora of guys that could see themselves among the All-State Performers (top ten finishers) this November. The pair that ended up in a sprint finish against one another, Alex Goss and Hayden Prescott claimed the 18th and 19th place finishes to secure help secure another runner-up team performance for Academy. It will take more than the championship course returning to Academy for the Chargers to bring back the blue trophy for the first time since 2017.Other state runners expected to return include Nate Klein (20th in 2021), Akilan Sankaran (34th in 2021), William Weinstein (64th in 2021), and Elliot Hickey (69th in 2021). Not only will the defending champs be a challenge but a Hope Christian squad still lingering with state title aspirations led by the two-time 4A individual champ Rendon Kuykendall also pose an obstacle. Especially considering that the Huskies won that 2020 state race while also on the Academy course. The Chargers also enlist a new batch of talent every summer that could play vital roles in their success this season. We can expect to see Academy back competing for more glory in 4A in 2022 as they possess one of their more experienced squads in recent years.
