Returning from the sophomore class is the defending 5A state champion Leah Futey that was seemingly unbeatable all season. Futey guides a talented group in the 2023 class that includes Los Alamos' Sophie Chadwick, Academy's Katie Patton, Cottonwood Classical's Sophia Lopez, Academy for the Tech and Classics Lily Rittmeyer and Noelani Van Loon. Chadwick was inches away from being the 4A individual champion but there is consolation in taking runner up to fellow teammate Norissa Valdez. Also expected to be in the mix to contest in 4A will be Academy's top finisher from 2019 Katie Patton. In 3A, Sophia Lopez will be looking to help defend Cottonwood Classical's blue trophy while also taking on the likes of fellow sophomores Kendra Emery and Liana Fernandez. 1A/2A should be no surprise that ATC and Pecos bring back some of the best runners in the state for the class of 2023.
