While most Championship teams rely on depth, the Boys Class 5A team competition was a battle of top end quality. The top three teams garnered a majority of their points from a small number of athletes, with the Albuquerque Academy Chargers winning their first title since 2012, wresting the blue trophy from San Juan County's two year hold. The Chargers finished with a 13 points victory 64-51-41 over the St. Pius X Sartans and the Farmington Scorpions.
Despite entering Championship Weekend with 22 state entrants, only six Chargers earned All-State honors in 10 of the 19 events. Earning All-State honors were Justin Ludwig (Discus), Matt Blumenschein (Long Jump), and AJ Kedge (3200m), as well as the 5th place Medley Relay, each chipping in to the 64 point total.
