There were only three races on the slate last week, and only one has results. Although, word out of Hobbs is that Carlos Oregon led the Eagles to their 7th straight win with a 15:49 first place finish, with his teammates placing five in the top nine spots. There were no further details provided.
Rio Rancho Jamboree
Both Championship Races were nicely covered here, so let’s spend a moment looking at the Varsity Races.
Grants’ Michael Anzures patiently raced his way to a 17:18 individual victory. Diving a bit deeper, his 17:18 placed his 10th amongst all 5A competitors.
In the team battle, it was the Alvin Curley-led Navajo Pine Warriors who fired a shot across the bow to all 1A/2A teams. Using a 59 second split, the Warriors accounted for 104 points in the 35 team field, outdistancing the runner-up 5A Aztec Tigers’ by 52 points.
In the Girls Race, Estancia’s Aubri Wrye broke from the pack early, taking top individual honors with her 20:10.
Taking top team honors were the Robertson Lady Cardinals, who were led by Annabella Miller’s runner-up finish of 20:25 helping her team score 98 points to the 5A Aztec Lady Tigers’ 124 points.
Aztec’s two runner-up finishes definitely adds some intrigue to the coming District 1-5A race.
