What could be more intimidating at the Cleveland Relays meet than, well, Cleveland relays? Photo by Rod Stanopiewicz.
We take our weekly quick preview trip around the state to see what will be happening this weekend in New Mexico high school track and field:

The southwest region schools converge on Lordsburg. In years past, this has been an outstanding showdown between 2A Lordsburg and 3A Silver. We'll find out soon enough if that matchup retains its luster after some key graduations for both schools. |

Will there be a few Texas schools in the mix, or will it be strictly the large-school contingent from the southeast quadrant of the state? Since this is the home meet for Hobbs, we should probably expect the Eagles to pull out a few stops. If we get results from this meet, those results should tell us a lot. |

The NMAA master schedule shows five teams coming to this meet, which would send a disturbance through the usual definition of "quad," but we'll wait and see what happens before we jump to any conclusions. This one is very much a small-school meet, so perhaps bumping up the definition of quad isn't such a bad deal, anyway. |

Like Hobbs, only at the far other end of the state, Zuni gets to host this weekend. If there's something magical to be seen from Zuni, this would be the weekend of choice to unveil it. |

I do not believe I've seen any Hagerman results yet this season, giving this meet some immediate interest value. It looks like a good convergence of eastern New Mexico small schools coming into town for this one. |

If you're looking for the big-deal meet of the weekend, this one probably qualifies. Note that there are no other immediate Albuquerque area meets taking place this weekend. Cleveland hosts almost all the big guns this weekend, and there promises to be exciting, high-level competition in events clean across the board. Show well at this one and you have great reason to feel good about the promise of your season. Even if some of the teams are a little spring break depleted, there are enough teams coming that feel will notice any dilution of the field. |

Valencia is close enough to Albuquerque to pick up anyone from the Duke City or nearby looking for maybe something a little different from what the Cleveland relays offer. There are enough schools, large and small, coming in for this one that expectations should be at a zenith in Valencia as well. |

For the northern New Mexico schools, many of which are on spring break, the options are few. Travel big or show up in Las Vegas. And the list of schools aiming to show up is substantial. Look for this one to be one of the most telling 3A-and-under kind of meets of the entire season. |

So, a smaller selection of meets (partly driven by issues related to spring breaks taking place around the state), means larger collections of teams at the meets that are taking place this weekend. It's a nice opportunity for some schools to see other schools they don't always get to see.
And, if you send in results, they will be posted here.
