Track Prospects 2013: 5A Girls

5A girls track and field is shaping up to be fairly competitive this spring. That's good news if you happen the live in the greater Albuquerque area, because that's where the top contending teams seem to be coming from.

The big three need no introduction. If any of Cleveland, La Cueva, and Eldorado require any introduction, you haven't been following girls track and field in New Mexico too long.

Although the just-completed cross country season suggests some shuffling of the distance events ordering of individuals from last spring, that's not a big issue for any of the big three. Cleveland, La Cueva, and Eldorado all figure to be better in track than what they were last year based on this fall's cross country results. Remember, though, it's not nearly as much about depth in track distance--it's about top-end talent. In New Mexico, if you don't place in the top six, you don't help your team score. That makes having high-end distance talent pretty critical to putting up distance points at state.

Malia Gonzales probably figures for more points than the analysis below shows. Mason Swanson should come in and contribute right away, as should Meghan Aguilera.

There would, however, be a disclaimer to that. Eldorado's track and field fortunes this spring just might have something to do who steps into the shoes of departing coach Teo Cutter. At the very least, there are a few people in Eldorado-land holding their breath over that one.

Hobbs, Clovis, and Alamogordo look to be the best of the southern tier schools and each are well enough positioned to make some kind of run with a little influx of talent.
