Track Prospects 2013: 4A Boys

On paper, 4A boys has the look of a very competitive contest going into the spring season.

Surely not many have forgotten that last year's state title went to Albuquerque Academy with Bloomfield running a solid second. Unless I've totally missed a clue somewhere, Bloomfield won't be back to defend that runner-up finish, but will be down a classification creating havoc in the 3A ranks (provided they can fill some big holes opened up by graduation).

But, figure there are some other teams ready to give AA a run for their money. Artesia and Los Alamos both return a solid crew. As heavily as Los Alamos is represented in distance points in the virtual meet analysis shown below, the Hilltoppers' cross country season suggests they might even improve on projections from last year's track and field results. To come out on top, however, Los Alamos will have to find more points outside of the events from 800 meters and up. Brady Stokes in the javelin is a good start, but LA will need more. Artesia and Albuquerque Academy simply have too many ways to put points on the board to be beaten by a massive pile of distance points. Not to mention that AA figures to come into a few distance points of their own.

Moriarty and Piedra Visa are solid, well-rounded programs worth watching to see what will come of their efforts this spring. Both need a boost to reach into the AA/Artesia league, but neither require a total rehaul to get there. Keep in mind that Piedra Vista ran a couple of very nice relays at state last year and graduated almost nobody off of those teams. Given the imbalance of points allocated to relays in New Mexico, that's a pretty important piece of information to take into account that doesn't show in the analysis below.

With St. Pius X uniting the boys and girls track program under a single coach,  it's entirely possible we see a little different show from the guys in black and gold than what we saw last spring. Stay tuned and pay close attention to the developments there.

This year's race should be close enough that relays are an essential part of the picture for any team that would have designs on winning it.
