Week 5 Meet Action

Every week we shuffle the deck and redistribute to a new set of meets. Here's a quick glance ahead at this weekend's action.

The big meet collision for this weekend happens on Friday evening in Socorro. It's a pretty select field that will be toeing the line at the NMT golf coures (I have just one question about that--why would a school that has no intercollegiate athletic teams have a golf course? cheeky), a field that includes Rio Rancho, Cleveland, Los Alamos, and a few more to make a field of ten teams. The significance of the first Cleveland/Los Alamos matchup since the UNM Lobo Invitational isn't lost on very many people. These schools apparently prefer mountainous backdrops for their showdowns. Last time it was the Sandias, this time it will be beneath venerable M Mountain. The afternoon shadows should be well across the golf course by the time the starter's pistol fires at this one. And that should make for some very nice racing conditions.

Up the road a piece are the general Albuquerque area meets hosted by Belen, Bosque, West Mesa, and Manzano. That should spread the Duke City schools (plus a few) around pretty nicely. Bosque only takes 1A - 3A schools in their meet and they figure to capture most of those. The other meets will be comprised of mostly, though not exclusively, 4A and 5A programs.

Out east, Pecos hosts the Ron Valdez Invitational. Farther south, Carlsbad takes their turn at hosting a meet. Figure the eastern plains schools get mostly split between these two meets. There aren't any other in-state meets without a significant travel commitment. Pecos has the distinction of hosting Alonzo Chavez and his Mora teammates this weekend.

Well west of Albuquerqe, those who dare will take on Laguna-Acoma at their invitational. The way L-A has been running so far this fall, this could get ugly with a home course advantage. Wingate figures to get most of the western New Mexico teams that don't end up at Laguna-Acoma.

Cobre should be doing a sweep of the southwestern schools, and perhaps reaching as far as Las Cruces for a couple of team entries.

Out-of-state meets trolling for a little New Mexico action include the Shane Morris meet in Pine Top, AZ (but this meet might get shut out due to the 1-2 factor of Wingate and Laguna-Acoma). Another meet with a better chance of picking up a New Mexico school or two is the Pagosa Springs Invitational in Colorado. Dulce and a few other schools aren't very far away. Pagosa's cool air and abundant ponderosa pines beckon those weary of moving between scattered pinons and junipers for shade. Whether there will be takers or not remains a different story.

That's what's on my radar screen for the weekend. As always, meet results are appreciated in a big way. We'll get them up and visible about as quickly as we get them. Times will go to athlete pages as promptly as possible.
