New Mexico Week in Review: April 22 - 28

There were a lot of meets in New Mexico, and I'd love to tell you we're looking at results for all of them. Since that didn't happen, we'll take a look at the meets for which we did receive results:

APS Metro Championships

After nearly blowing away on Thursday, they were able to complete the finals of this meet on Friday under comparatively pleasant conditions. In order to conserve time, the results linked below show only the finals results. In some cases, that means only the top six. I apologize for that, but it was that or wait another day to get results up. Complete results can be located on directathletics.com.

La Cueva definitely showed some muscle at this meet. They have two weeks to put it all together in a neat little package and take on New Mexico's track and field Goliath.

For more detail on the meet, see Teo Cutter's article linked below.

There remain some unresolved issues with the results of this meet. Hopefully, nobody's ticket to state is hanging in the balance here.

Between Amanda Babicke and CJ Berryman, Pojoaque looks to be doing very nicely in sprints.

In what could be a very good indicator of things to come in the 3A state meet, Socorro (on their home track) edged Robertson High School. It's likely that neither team was quite showing their full hand, but both should be squarely in the middle of the 3A girls contest at state. St. Michael's will rely heavily on the talents of Maya McGowan. And, in a more competitive state meet, the points McGowan can pull in may be more telling than what they were at this meet.

The Silver boys flexed a little muscle of their own and gave one more indicator that they are a significant obstacle to overcome in 3A boys.

If you're wondering what Taos and Santa Fe were up to this weekend, this is the place to look. Santa Fe's boys put the hurt on a number of solid Colorado programs to come away with the win. And, it would appear from event assignments at this meet that Santa Fe wasn't pulling out all of the stops. Bigger things could be on the way.

Last Chance Meet

Aztec, Kirtland Central, and Shiprock headed over into Arizona for a late-season test, but not quite a last chance. Of the New Mexico entries, Aztec made the most of the trip to Kayenta, winning the girls division and finishing second in the boys.

Lovington Wildcat Relays

Lovington hosted the big schools. And, not surprisingly, they held up very nicely under the challenge.

Artesia and Clovis finished in a near dead heat for the boys title, with Artesia coming out just ahead for the win. Clovis edged Hobbs in an equally tight race for the girls title. At this point in the season, these results probably give us a reasonably clear picture of the relative strength of these teams (while still allowing that the teams may not be showing everything yet).

Clovis's boys relays appear to be primed for state. That was a very tidy sweep of the three conventional sprint relays they posted in Lovington. Roswell's Richard Medrano had a nice meet, winning the 200 and LJ.

Kelsi Lewis of Hobbs pulled off an impressive 400/800 double. Teammate Andrea Wittman doubled the 1600 and 3200. Both should be state contenders, but the state fields will be a good deal tougher than the fields at Lovington. Clovis's Jenna Sievers demonstrated a little versatility in winning both hurdle events and the high jump.

Mirmanian Invitational

Amber Saiz looks more and more like the girl to beat in the 4A 800 with each passing week. For that matter, she'd probably win 5A as well.

All the usual suspects from the south-central part of the state had nice meets, including (in no particular order) Regina Marquez, Ricky Milks, Rigo Moreno, Mac Shoaf, Devin Enslen, Kyton Jurney, Andrew Keppeler, and a few others.

Mayfield's sprint relays appear to have the potential to blow some things open at state if the competition isn't fully ready. There should be some great relay showdowns coming up in a little more than a week.

New Mexico District 1 - 1A Meet

Cimarron convincingly won their district meet on their own track. Springer was an easy second, and everyone else was in another area code.

While there's some tough hurdle competition ahead at state, Austin Vincent of Des Moines will go to Albuquerque with big hopes of placing high in both hurdle events. Leonard Arias of Springer won all three throwing events, but the javelin looks like his best event.

Shelby Walker of Des Moines was very busy at this meet, winning the 200, 400, javelin, discus, and high jump. From Friday's meet results, it would appear she's most likely to cause trouble at state in the high jump and javelin, but it would seem that this is one young athlete with some multi-event promise.

New Mexico District 8 - 1A Meet

Gateway Christian out of Roswell, a team we haven't heard much from during the season, showed very well at this meet. Nathan Bishop  and Kate Hammonds showed very nice sprint speed for Gateway.

Top athletes out of this district to watch at state include Godfrey Cordova, Malik Anderson, and Sasha Navarette.
