Outdoor Season Officially Underway!

With the running of yesterday's Las Cruces Invitational at the Field of Dreams, the NM outdoor season is officially underway.

As so often happnes with early season meets, many of the results came out a little on the side of subdued, but it's not difficult to see some serious promise in several of the marks posted Friday.

No matter how you look at it, the 10.52 posted by Mayfield's Ricky Milks in the 100 meters qualifies as a noteworthy time. That's easily a state qualifying mark in the first in-state meet of the season. Look for more to come from the Mayfield senior speedster. Milks was last year's third-place finisher in the 5A 100 meters. Teammate Rigo Moreno posted a nice 15.03 to win the 110 hurdles, also punching a ticket to state.

Kyton Jurney of Las Cruces reserved his second weekend in May with a 50.74 time to win the 400. Torion Brown's shot put of 49-0 accomplished the same ends.

Onate's Andrew Keppler went 13-0 in the pole vault, winning the event and also qualifying for state.

On the girls' side of things, Kari Bumgarner of Las Cruces hopped, skipped, and jumped to a 34-8 in the triple, ensuring her first state qualification.

Multiple event winners from New Mexico included Gabriella Puents (Las Cruces) in the 100 and 200, Kari Bumgarner in the 300 hurdles and triple jump, and Onate's Sal Wright in the 1600 and 3200.

The NM outdoor season gets underway in a more serious way next weekend with five meets, the Chile Quad in Rio Rancho, the Gadsden Invitational in Anthony, the Grants Invitational, the Los Lunas Invitational, and the Rocket/Coyote Invitational in Roswell. Only the northernmost portion of the state gets left out of next weekend's action.

While you wait in anticipation of next weekend's action, perhaps one or two of you can fill me in on some details. Number one, the relay results from the Las Cruces Invitational indicate that the relays were run in yards, not meters. Was that an issue of how the relays were set up in Hy-Tek, or is that the configuration at the Field of Dreams? Second, was an electronic timing system used at this meet or were these hand times?
