ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The boys' competition at the NMAA 1A State Track and Field Championships delivered dominant individual performances, emerging young stars, and relay excellence as athletes battled for state titles on the grounds of the University of New Mexico.

Among the weekend's biggest storylines was the sprint dominance of Santiago Lopez (NM School for the Deaf), who completed a clean sweep of the short sprints while establishing himself as the fastest athlete in Class 1A. Lopez captured state titles in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, highlighted by a blazing performance in the 100m that produced a new Class 1A state-leading mark. His double-gold effort showcased both speed and consistency on the championship stage.

While Lopez ruled the short sprints, Logan High School's Aydin Kotara put together one of the most impressive all-around sprint performances of the meet. Kotara stormed to the state title in the 400-meter dash and also secured a runner-up finish in the highly competitive 200-meter final. He also provided crucial support to his teammates in the 4x400m relay. His ability to excel across multiple sprint distances proved invaluable and cemented his status as one of the state's top quarter-milers regardless of class.

The emergence of freshman standout Zaimien Saucedo (Melrose) provided one of the championship's most exciting and perhaps surprising moments. Saucedo announced his arrival on the state scene by winning the 800-meter run in a remarkable 2:00.13. The performance not only earned him a state championship but also established a new Class 1A state-leading mark. With three more years of high school competition ahead, Saucedo's breakthrough victory signals a bright future in New Mexico distance running.

Distance specialist Taysen Begay (Tse Yi Gai) delivered a commanding weekend of his own, completing a distance double that few athletes can accomplish at the state level. Begay captured Class 1A state titles in both the 1600m and 3200m races while setting new state-leading marks in each event. Begay's distance races had nail-biting finishes, with each race being won by just over one second. His endurance and race strategy separated him from the field and made him one of the meet's most accomplished performers.

Team success was equally evident in the relay events, where Mountainair High School showcased exceptional depth and teamwork. The Mustangs dominated the sprint relays, earning state titles in both the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays. The overall winner of the 1A team title was Melrose High School, who edged out Logan High School 83-80 at the end of the meet.
