New Mexico high school track and field athletes posted personal bests across multiple events during the week of April 6.
Alexander Casarez (Goddard) ran 10:01.63 in the 3200 meters at the George Love Relays on April 10, improving from his previous best of 12:59.24. The time ranks #39 in the state and set a school record for Goddard High School, earning Casarez second place among 16 competitors.
Kiki Brown (ABQ Academy) cleared 5-4 in the high jump at the Albuquerque Academy Twilight on April 10, bettering her March mark of 5-0. The sophomore ranks #3 in New Mexico and #1 among underclassmen in her class, finishing second in a field of six jumpers.
Lena Coombs (Onate) clocked 5:40.11 in the 1600 meters at the Therman Jordan Relays on April 11, dropping from her previous best of 5:54.62 set in March. The time moves her to #57 in the state rankings, and she placed third among 13 runners.
Ben Oldiverez (Eunice) ran 52.51 in the 400 meters at the Alfalfa Cap./Harvey Wilson Qualifier on April 10, improving from 55.48. The freshman leads all first-year athletes in the state and ranks #111 overall, winning his heat of six runners. Oldiverez also set a personal best in the 110 hurdles, running 18.35.
Zaimien Saucedo (Melrose) posted 2:03.00 in the 800 meters at the Alfalfa Cap./Harvey Wilson Qualifier on April 10, bettering his previous mark of 2:10.78 from May. The time established a school record for Melrose High School and ranks #75 statewide, with Saucedo leading all freshmen in the event and finishing second among six competitors.
Keyara Haywood (Rio Rancho) cleared 5-2 in the high jump at the Rio Rancho Invitational on April 11, improving from her March best of 5-0. The senior ranks #10 in New Mexico and won the event among 11 competitors.
Zach Reza (Lovington) threw 137-2.5 in the discus at the George Love Relays on April 10, improving from his previous best of 127-5. The mark ranks #31 in the state, and Reza won the event among 20 throwers. He also set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 38-4.
