Grants, New Mexico- Before the 2025 outdoor track and field season kicks off in New Mexico, we wanted to highlight a couple of athletes each week to build on the already strong community that we have, here in the Land of Enchantment.
Next, in our new series is Grants runner Laila Martinez who is one of the top female runners in New Mexico, and an Adams State commit. Here are the questions we asked her...
Q: What events do you compete in?
A: I compete in the 800m,1600m, and sometimes the 3200m. You will catch me running the 800m most times though!
Q: What got you involved in track & field?
A: My uncle has been my biggest inspiration, and the main reason I got involved in track. He ran for Laguna Acoma and later, New Mexico Highlands University, seeing his success has been my biggest motivation throughout my career. While I will not be competing at Highlands, I am excited to be competing in the same conference at Adams State.
Q: Any favorite memories during your high school career?
A: While I have many favorite memories, one that stands out is nearly missing the state meet my freshman year. I arrived so late that my coach was calling me as the girls were already lining up. I hadn't warmed up, hadn't even put on my uniform, and to make matters worse, I had lost my bib from the day before. I ran that race on pure adrenaline and somehow ended up winning. Afterward, officials nearly disqualified me because my bib was hand-written in pen, but thankfully, they let it slide! That memory is special to me because of the total strangers who stepped in to help me get ready in those few minutes from putting on my bib to tying my shoes. It perfectly captures what track is all about and has given me some of the best friendships!
Q: Do you have a ritual or routine before you compete?
A: I have quite a few pre-meet rituals, some would say too many! Starting with the night before I must eat spaghetti, I am sure my family does not want to see any pasta after track. Last year, I also started eating whole footlong cookies from Subway before meets so that has become a superstition. I also must wear my special bracelet on my ankle, made by my sister. Last year, the colors were black and orange, but I am excited to see what colors she has chosen this year. Finally, the most important part of my routine is a pre-race pep talk from my dad, and if he is not there, then a text or call will suffice. Every great race has started with his advice, so now, it is a ritual I cannot compete without.
Q: What are some of your goals for this upcoming season?
A: One of my biggest goals this season is to set a new state record in the 800m. Last year, I exceeded my own expectations, so this year I'm aiming even higher. I also hope to reach the podium with my medley team and, if possible, break our school record!
Q: What is a necessity for you at a meet? AirPods, a certain snack, anything like that?
A: A "must have" for me at every meet is my Beats. Before I race, I need to listen to my music but never with my AirPods, it just doesn't feel the same. And when it comes to snacks, I always go for gummy bears before I compete, specifically Albanese. They're my go to pre-race treat!
Q: What are some of your go-to songs to get you in the right head space for a meet?
A: It really depends on my mood for the day but some of my favorite ones that I end up going to are "Jimmy Cooks" by 21 Savage, "Fake Love" by Drake, and "Baby" by Lil Baby. If I am feeling a country mood then I usually listen to "Sweet Rose," "Loving You On My Mind" by Chris Stapleton, or "I Know A Place" by Zach Top. I like all genres but rock so you can find me listening to just about anything.
Q: Besides track & field, what are some things you enjoy?
A: Besides track & field, I enjoy spending time with my family and family. Usually, both of these end up with us eating out so, I would have to say that eating is something I really enjoy. I also love traveling and exploring new places whether that be a hike or in the city. Honestly, I'm pretty easygoing, I enjoy almost anything as long as I'm surrounded by people who make me laugh and have a good time.
Q: After a meet, how do you celebrate? Sleep, go to your favorite restaurant, what do you do?
A: My favorite way to celebrate after a meet is usually going out to eat with my family at Texas Roadhouse. After we usually head over to Bahama Bucks for a sweet treat and maybe Starbucks for a dragon fruit refresher.
Q: What can people expect from your team this season?
A: This season, I have really high hopes for our team. While we're a young group, there's so much untapped potential here, and I genuinely believe we're going to see some great things. We've got fresh faces, new opportunities, and a lot of energy, and I'm confident that as we build on our skills and work together, each athlete will not only improve but surprise themselves with what they can accomplish. It's a season to learn, grow, and set the stage for something special. I'm excited to see where this journey takes us!
