New Mexico's Future Stars - Boys

Mateo Sanchez (St. Pius X HS)

He's just a freshman, but my oh my has Sanchez already started making an impact on the New Mexico rankings.

At the Macen Holden Cleveland Invite, the freshman clocked a 16:44.90 on the 5K course,  good enough for 21st place. This marked his season opener and laid the groundwork for the rest of the 2025 season. His performance was good enough to land him a spot amongst one of two freshmen in New Mexico to run under the 17-minute mark for the 5K this season.

Even though this is Sanchez's first high school season, he does have experience in the world of running. In his 2024 cross country season, Mateo Sanchez partook in the NXR South West regional meet, running a near sub-17 minute 5K in his respective race. Most recently, he clocked a sub 10:30 in the 3200m during the spring season for outdoors. Again, all this was done as an 8th grader, which makes us wonder, what other surprises does he have in store for us?

Keep an eye out for Mateo Sanchez as he undergoes his first high school season.
