In this week's edition of New Mexico Future Stars, we'll be looking at recent standout freshmen performances.
New Mexico, if you haven't already, meet Grace Montoya!
Clocking 5:23.93 in the 1,600m and 11:47.81 in the 3,200m, the freshman from Los Alamos High School is currently leading the state in the freshman class in both events, while also sitting No. 3 in the 800m with her time of 2:28.91.
She earned these marks recently at the Chandler Rotary Invitational in Chandler, Arizona. Just last spring as an eighth-grader, Montoya ran 5:41.21 at this same meet.
This past weekend at the Bernalillo Relays, Montoya raced the 800m and snatched her second individual victory of the season, crossing the line in 2:28.96. That was only 0.05 seconds off of her time in Chandler.
Montoya is just getting started. She will definitely be a star to keep your eyes this outdoor season.
