New Mexico Future Stars: Deron Lastyano

In this week's edition of New Mexico Future Stars, we'll be looking at the recent standout sophomore performances.

New Mexico, if you haven't already, meet Deron Lastyano!

The Zuni sophomore clocked a personal best of 16:45.30 recently at the Shiprock Chieftain Invitational, placing third overall. This was his first time breaking the 17:00 barrier. 

Lastyano is ranked No. 1 in the sophomore class and No. 11 in New Mexico overall. 

Running 17:06.99, he finished seventh at the 2022 New Mexico State Cross Country Championship last fall as a freshman. 

With it still being early on in the season, Zuni will be a solid contender in the 3A championship in November.

Laila Martinez - Grants - In her first 5k of the season, Laila Martinez ran a personal best of 20:23.70. She is currently No. 2 in the sophomore class. 

Raymond Hunt - Kirtland - So far this season, Hunt has clocked 17:31.50 - however, he ran 16:54.62 at last season's New Mexico State Cross Country Championship. He is currently No. 4 in the sophomore class.
