Richard Harper Invitational
Albuquerque Academy
Albuquerque, NM
Girls Events
The biggest meet outside of state championships, Athletes have been known to put up phenomenal marks here. Coaches with athletes treading the line of qualification marks must feel confident that those marks can be achieved this weekend. A total of 27 schools will toe the line in what's looking to be fantastic weather. Consisting of the majority of schools in the metro area in arguably the most spectator-friendly venue in the state. Although every event should be competitive the events to watch for on the girl's side include the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles,1600m, 200m, discus, and Pole Vault. This would also be the perfect time to see a majority of qualifying relay teams hit the mark. In particular, the 4x400m and 4x200m have a scarce amount of teams to qualify this season. The hurdles will be the hotly tested event with La Cueva's Sima Lucero and Los Alamos' Angelina Passalacqua entered in both hurdle events. Sima Lucero will also be in a good matchup against Los Alamos Jaiya Daniels in the 200m. The 1600m will feature a stacked lineup of state qualifiers including Leah Futey, Emma Montoya, Anna Hastings, Carysa Marquez, and Kate Henderson as all having gone under 5:25 this season. In the field events, discus will marquee Cleveland's Jaylee Gandert coming in with a throw of 119-4 as well as Rio Rancho's Sterling Glenn with a 118-5 to her credit. Pole Vault will include a pair of 10ft vaulters in Colette Bibeault and Dani Trellue. No better time to see a flurry of personal bests and season highs across the board with matchups as good as expected this weekend.
Boys Events
The weather hasn't been an issue for most of the meets this year, yet every team is looking forward to optimistically ideal weather at Richard Harper. Events to watch for the boys include the 110H, 300H, 800m,400m, High jump, and Shot Put. As stated with the girls, the hurdles are on another level this year. Defending 4A 110m/300m champion Kidus Tekle will battle against Los Alamos' Daniel Kim, Rio Rancho's Willie Johns, and Piedra Vista's Bryce Joshlin in an electric atmosphere leading up to state next month. The 800m field has a handful of 1:58 and 1:59 boys that could be pushing the limits of personal bests this weekend. Alex Goss leads the way with a mark of 1:58 flat. Richard Harper is known for being a sub-two-minute party and there are plenty of boys looking for an invitation. The 400m as with the girls is the perfect place for runners to latch themselves onto their competitors and hold on for strong finishes. At the moment eight boys are entered with 50-second marks in the event and potentially could go sub-50 this weekend. A good showdown in the high jump is likely with Cleveland's Nic Trujillo with the state lead of 6-7 and Cibola's Derrick Velasquez with a best mark of 6-4. How high can they go in good weather and even greater competition? Looking at the Shot put another event that can finally see state qualifiers blossoming through. All eyes are on Cibola's Reuben Johnson, Cleveland's Stratton Shufelt, and Academy's Franklin Rambo as the trio leading the state in the event this year.
It's time for the Richard Harper Memorial Invitational in the city of Albuquerque.
