The bright spot of Belen in 2021 was the promise that the young runners that were competitive all year long leading up to the 4A state meet landed a 7th place finish. Now they return All-State performer Lisette Sanchez who claimed 10th place and will rely on her to lead the Eagles to further success in 2022. Along with Sanchez, returns Sara Martinez (20th in 2021), Iris Silva (35th in 2021), Gabriela Jaramillo (79th in 2021), and Shauncey Cordova (83rd in 2021). This season may be the accumulation of a team that has the potential to outshine plenty of other 4A powerhouses to land on the podium for the first time in several years. They will rely on newcomers to varsity ranks, Jadarose Wright and Ahnaleigha Wright to fill in the gap of graduation. Belen looks strong to take on District 5-4A rival St. Pius X which has got the better of Belen recently. If the Eagles can get an early win against St.Pius at the district meet that would be a great indicator of what they can achieve for the state championships the following weekend.
