New Mexico Cross Country Countdown Series
#14 St. Pius X Sartans
Last year, St. Pius was running to perfection with perhaps their best squad in program history as they captured yet another 3rd place finish in back-to-back seasons. They return having dipped from their #5 ranking in 2020 as they see a talented Gracie Baca graduate. They do return Trista Cordova coming off a 7th place performance at the 4A state meet including setting a new personal best in that race with a 19:48. Cordova certainly has the potential to sneak into an individual 4A contender conversation if this off-season has seen her progress further. The other returning state runners include Maricia Marquez (26th in 2021), Brooke Kelly (40th in 2021), Leah Crabtree (41st in 2021), and Grace Aragon (98th in 2021). It is reasonable to expect a possible slip in St.Pius but this program has remained consistent throughout the years despite the departures of all-state performers. They face plenty of competition from the rest of 4A including their district rivals of Belen who return solid, young, and talented runners as well. As 2022 kicks off rely on St. Pius to once again be in the mix for a chance on the podium of 4A.
