Dipping off from their 2021 ranking of #19, Shiprock returns with more of a clear picture of their potential than the previous season. Coming off a 6th place finish from the 4A state meet, and return all but one from that squad which was able to secure 195 points amongst a great outing of 4A talent in 2021. Kaydence Platero is a senior that leads the Chieftains with four championship races under her belt with her highest placing being a 4th in 2020. Other returning scorers include Haleigh Bigman (36th in 2021), Taylor Begay (57th in 2021), and Kaliah Peters (93rd in 2021). Even with the returning production of Shiprock, it looks to be no easy sledding coming into 2022 as powerhouses like Los Alamos, ABQ Academy, and St. Pius X remain just as competitive as years past. Among District 1-4A, Shiprock will also find itself among tough competition from rivals Gallup, Kirtland Central, and the rest that make it one of the most difficult districts in 4A. The sky is the limit for the Chieftains led by Platero as they could easily be back in the mix on the podium if the stars align for them on a championship day in November.
