New Mexico Cross Country Countdown Series
#19 Atrisco Heritage Jaguars
Although it may seem like a school in Atrisco Heritage's predicament is always battling an upward stream residing in district 1-5A without a doubt the most challenging district in New Mexico. Yet diving deeper into the #19 ranked Jaguar squad you'll see they have come a long way and are looking to field one of their most competitive teams in recent years. Cameron Shorty leads this team coming off a 27th place finish in 2021 and on the cusp of breaking the 17:00 barrier as well. The Rest of the projected scoring five will include returners Jonathan Garcia (89th in 2021), Anastacio Martinez (53rd in 2021), Geeovanny Sotelo, and Ivan Villalba. Making it to the state meet is no easy task when the other schools toeing the line at the district meet include Rio Rancho, Cleveland, Volcano Vista, and Cibola. That would be the last ten years of the 5A state meet (2012-2021), eight of them have been won by a team now residing in that district. As other schools depart a handful of varsity runners Atrisco Heritage may be able to seize the gap in turnover and make a rare team appearance at the state championships this season. To make it to the big meet would quantify that the Jaguars certainly have podium potential. Keep an early eye on this team often counted out as they may have the experience and resilience to make a splash in 2022.
