New Mexico Boys XC Countdown: #21 Kirtland Central

New Mexico Cross Country Countdown Series

The New Mexico Cross Country Countdown breaks down the top 25 New Mexico boys and girls teams returning this fall. These rankings will include projected top runners and weigh how each team may do in their respective districts and state competitions. Changes to class alignments and adaptions to the state championship format have been taken into consideration. These rankings are based on the past season of performances. All top returning runners are only projections and may include athletes no longer on the team due to transfer or out-of-state relocation.

#21 Kirtland Central Broncos

We have arrived at the team that could potentially once again claim district 1-4A, Kirtland Central. The #21 team on our countdown returns off a 7th place performance at the 4A state meet. How well will the Broncos adapt to losing a few key pieces from that state team as they seek to bring a couple of their varsity runners to hopefully some sub-18:00 performances? Sophomore Dathan Esson leads with a 17:30 personal best and a 25th overall finish at the state meet. Also returning from last year's state team include Quade Silago (53rd in 2021), Lestat Johnson (65th in 2021), and David Padilla (82nd in 2021).  Kirtland Central will face a challenge from district rivals Shiprock and Miyamura among the rest of the district 1-4A. As crucial as those returning runners will be come October and November, every school in class 4A will rely on the emergence of new stars on their teams to take over the reins in scoring positions. The Broncos are still looking for that spark to ignite a podium finish in 2022, they may see their closest finish at the state meet in recent years.
