2021 New Mexico Boys Track and Field Gatorade Athlete of the Year
Luke Wysong
The New Mexico 100m/200m 5A boys champion, Luke Wysong of Sue Cleveland has been announced the Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for 2021. Luke went undefeated in his respective 100m and 200m events while also a runner-up finish in the long jump and the 400m at the state championships. A standout football star who has signed to play at the University of New Mexico, he had a breakout season after missing out on a junior season and waiting for his time among varsity ranks.
A Rio Rancho Fire Department and Police Department Youth Volunteer, Wysong has donated his time locally as part of
food-donation drives and he has volunteered on behalf of multiple community service initiatives through his church
youth group. "Luke is, without question, a talented athlete and possesses a great deal of physical ability, but his work
ethic and willingness to prepare is second to none," said Cleveland High head coach Kenny Henry. "I have been
around many great athletes, but Luke Wysong is the greatest competitor there is."
Wysong has maintained a 3.24 weighted GPA in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to play football
on scholarship this fall at the University of New Mexico, where he also hopes to compete in track and field.
