Rio Rancho Rust Buster Recap: Track is Back in New Mexico

Sprints 

Plenty of new faces to shine in the sprints after graduations from 2019 and 2020 have left most events without returning all-state sprinters. Cleveland's football star switching over to track star with ease as he won the boys 100m in a blazing 10.93 to start the year. Elijah Figueroa (11.20) of Rio Rancho and brother Evan Wysong (11.51) rounding out the podium spots. Figueroa would take the 200m in 22.43 as Trevon Dennard (22.90) and Traivan Williams (23.01) finish behind. The 400m was won by Andrew Spears (52.29) as his teammate Jared Duran (53.35) claimed 2nd and Storm's Robert Beal (53.90) in 3rd.


Girls 100m heat #2 

Girls sprints was a stellar performance by Hilltopper duo Nyla Lee (13.06, 26.94) and Holly Sanchez (13.15, 27.22) who were able to go 1-2 in the 100m and 200m. Another Hilltopper with Nia Hartzol (13.55) in the 100m captured the 3rd place spot to ensure Los Alamos went 1-3 in their first race of the season. Academy's Izzy Nguyen-spiers claimed 3rd in the 200m with a time of 29.76. The 400m was a small field consisting of four as Jocelyn Garcia of Academy would claim victory in a convincing 1:02.
