Cottonwood Classical Boys Capture first State Title in 3A
The first race of the Western Sky Community Care State Cross Country Championships kicked off with the top returner from 2019 Justin Howey, dominant performance finishing in a time of 15:59. New Mexico Military Institute's Lance Miller made huge improvements from his 15th place finish of last year's championship by claiming runner-up honors in 17:07 while teammate Henry Dewey rounded out the 3rd spot. The Coyotes were a team with the potential to take advantage of the circumstances as they were among 3A ranks and they did so to perfection. Yes, Zuni, Laguna Acoma, Santa Fe Indian, Navajo Prep, and Santa Fe Prep all were absent from this championship that beat Cottonwood. Looking into the details, Laguna Acoma had already moved down to A/2A, meanwhile, Zuni had lost all but one from that 2019 roster to graduation. Santa Fe Indian looked like they could have had a promising season but Cottonwood Classical returned a strong bunch that seemed to be more than another school at the time. They found a way to look back at their sixth-place performance and come to the realization that they wanted to achieve more the next time around. Howey was the #1 man, but the real reason for their success came from the other scorers in Zachary Jeantete, Carter Swanson, Alex Bergevin, and Bohde Havenor.
