Galvin Curley figured to have an oversized impact in this year's distance events as well.
We now turn our attention to the 2A Boys. Specifically, we're looking at senior boys who could have been the difference this spring in their team coming home from the state meet with a trophy or not. Why seniors? Because they were the ones with the end of their high school careers on the line and, overall, the most invested in the season that was lost. So, the criteria for making it to this article included having a team the figured to contend for a trophy and being a senior with at least a solid shot at placing at state this spring.
I'll take the teams alphabetically and look at athletes as we go.
Capitan - It's difficult to overestimate the kind of impact sprinter/jumper Wyatt Lowrance might have had on this year's state meet. Jumper/pole vaulter Kort Sparks, pole vaulter Garrison Weems, and jumper Julian Garcia are three more who could have substantially helped the Tigers in their trophy chase.
Cloudcroft - The Bears also had hopes of making a push for a trophy run. For them, the seniors who figured to lead the way included pole vaulter Gavin Williams, sprinter Marshal Virden, middle distance type Dylan Jones, distance runner Mike Ersinghaus, and throwers Kyle Merril and Dakota Moon. None of these guys were at the top of their respective event lists, but if, collectively, they had a solid state meet Cloudcroft might easily have gone home with a piece of hardware.
Pecos - The Panthers looked to pole vaulter/distance runner Devin Gonzales and thrower Ishmael Villegas to help launch a serious trophy bid. The rest of the help was going to have to come from younger members of the team.
Santa Rosa - Last year's state champions figured to be very much in the hunt this year as well, and with good reason. Potential state meet contributions figured to come from distance runner Elijah Bachicha, hurdlers Martin Madrid and Shawn Agar. Madrid also figured in the javelin, while Agar figured at the triple jump pit. The Lions have been a perpetual contender of late and nothing about that seemed due to change this year.
Texico - Texico finished a little out of the title hunt last spring, but it could have been a very different story this spring, though most of that figured to come from younger athletes on the team (meaning that next year, too, could be a big year for Texico). The Wolverines had big senior contributors lined up in throwers Robbie Clause and Julian Hernandez. The rest? Well, it would be mostly sophomores and juniors. Beware the future from this group.
