Air Force HS Open: Schurr Rises To The Occasion

At the top of the curve it was anybody's race.

With less than 70 meters to go in the 200 Gavin Schurr held a slim lead in lane 4 over Jackson Price and Keirryse Simpson, who were in lanes five and six.

For a moment it appeared that the race would be decided on the final straightway of those iconic royal blue lanes separated by painted white lines.

Like many races at the Air Force High School Indoor Open, this one - one of the final races of the meet - looked like it was going down to the final strides.

But Schurr had other plans.

The Fairview junior swiftly shifted gears, or perhaps pushed his booster button with less than 50 meters to go.

Ignition: Engaged

Schurr ate up the blue track, efficiently pumping his arms and legs in mechanical precision. He powered off and away to his second victory of the day, but this one right here would be his weekend masterpiece.

Schurr dipped at the line as the crowd let out a high pitched "ooooo!" seeing that he clearly cruised well under 22 seconds. He shifted down in gears before crashing on the mat at the end of the runaway nearly half a second before anyone else.

And then there was silence.

The once anxious and excited cheers that echoed throughout the Cadet Field House went silent for a brief moment while and everyone waited for the official time.

And then it came in bright red numerals, coinciding with the announcement that now rang out to the field house.

21.58.

Meet record. Big time personal record. Colorado No. 1. US No. 11. And the fastest 200 by a Colorado runner - indoors.

Yes - you read that last line correctly.

Schurr's jaw dropped to the floor as teammates, and competitors alike made their way over to the Fairview junior representing RISE Athletics for a congratulatory hug and high five.

A year ago Schurr was a 22+ second 200 sprinter. Now he owned the fastest 200 in the state. Add his 6.86 victory in the 60 (he ran 6.85 in the prelims), and yeah, you could say Schurr has made his rise to the tops of Colorado's sprint supremacy.

Simpson and Price had big runs of their own in that 200, as the two were separated by just a hundredth of a second with Simpson in second in 22.03, and Price in 22.04.

It was perhaps the best of ending for the 2020 edition of the Air Force High School Open, which saw a handful of new faces rise up to state their intentions for the coming months, a field house-wide internet failure which temporarily stalled our live stream, and a ton of incredible performances.
