Onate High School got a rare opportunity to play host to Leo Manzano, the 2012 London Olympic 1500m Silver Medalist. Manzano is an accomplished and well known US middle distance runner who captured 5 NCAA Individual titles, was a 9 time All-American, and a 4 time US Champion in the 1500m. His Olympic silver medal was the first medal for the US in the 1500 meters since the great Jim Ryun in 1968 at Mexico City.
It was the message that Manzano brought to Onate students, athletes and staff that was equally impressed and inspired. Manzano is a spokesperson for the New Mexico Department of Health Dejelo Ya Campaign, aimed at promoting living a tobacco-free and healthy life. In addition, he talked about the importance of goal setting and overcoming life obstacles that can keep one from fulfilling dreams. At the conclusion of his presentation, the Onate students and athletes gave him a standing ovation.
