
After a mild March, as far as track and field weather goes, spring finally made its presence this past Thursday at the Mike Castillo Invite in Silver City. And although strong and steady winds created less than perfect running conditions, a few of New Mexico's strongest specialty athletes fought off Mother Nature's gusty arrival to announce their own.
Standouts of the afternoon included Mayfield sprinter Riley Folkman (center), who stayed consistent with his past performances this season, bringing his smooth strides to the track to capture both the 100 (10.78) and 200 meters (22.46). His first place 100 meters earned Folkman a MileSplit National Elite Silver Standard time, putting him right behind Capital High's Augustine Larranga (10.63) in the overall rankings. With his sights on the state championships only a month away, Folkman appears to be prime for a shot at the 6A title. Although even under the best of circumstances, the 100 meters can be anyone's race once the gun goes off.
