With the Jamboree in the rear view mirror, we now are counting down the days until the state reconvenes in Rio Rancho for the Big Dance. Until then, we will pass the time getting to know this season's Senior Class.

Questionnaires were handed out at the Jamboree, or emailed to those who were not in attendance, and this is what we get. The Top 30 Seniors were determined from the 5K Rankings before the Jamboree, then adjusted after the Jamboree. If a kid was Top 30 before the race, they received a questionnare, if they raced themselves into the 30, then they were emailed a questionnarie after. With that, we continue our series with the male athlete to respond, Taos' Roy Madrid.

What are your Goals for the 2014 XC Season? How are the progressing toward them?

My goals for this season are to make my legs hurt really, really, really bad during practice and races; a team and individual championship would be pretty cool too, though.

What does a typical week of training look like for you? Do you Cross Train?

A typical week of training (meets on Saturday) involves a hard tempo and speed workout split up by 7mi recovery days. I lift on Sundays and occasionally participate in Ice Hockey off-season training in the mornings to improve my overall dexterity.

Describe your favorite workout and tell why it’s your favorite.

I enjoy tempo workouts best because they work with respect to how I feel on that day; they test my aerobic threshold without an anaerobic downside.

How long have you been running and how did you get started?

I have been running since my Freshman year. The Cross Country coach happened to be my Little League Baseball coach. He thought I ran well during baseball practices and coerced me to run distance track. There was no turning back.

What is your favorite and toughest race so far?

Favorite Race - Any meet close to sea level

Hardest Race - Ruidoso 2011

Describe your favorite XC memory.

Walking out of the stadium with my teammates, arm-in-arm, after our state race.

Out of all your accomplishments, which one(s) stand out?

I won state in three different sports this past year; that was pretty cool.

What is your favorite subject in school?

I don't abhor nor appreciate any subject in school, but if I had to choose I would pick chemistry with girls.

When you’re not running, what do you like to do?

I like to help with my local HOSA, Chemistry Club, Class Senate, Cafe Scientifique, and National Honor Society chapters. I really enjoy playing Baseball, Ice Hockey, chillin', kicking it with my homies, and doing Reps for Jesus.

How have your Coaches influenced you?

They make me run faster so that I can run in college. They are also proprietors of trust, respect, and integrity; they reinforce the values that guide my life.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will study Civil, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering at a fairly large university. I would like to run for the university, but we'll see where that goes.
