1A Girls: Plenty of Possibilities

It is always unwise to prematurely pronounce the demise of a dynasty. Even when it looks as if a dynasty will be in serious rebuilding mode, there's usually a reason why a dynasty became a dynasty. And those reasons usually don't go away with the handing out of diplomas.

So, even though Fort Sumner doesn't come out on top of the list in the virtual meet shown below based on marks from this season, it would be unwise to write the Vixens off. As the saying goes, tradition never graduates.

On the other hand, repeating again in 2014 will be a tall order for Fort Sumner. There is a growing cluster of teams that are drawing close to the level of proficience of the Fort Sumner team.

Mountainair shows at the top of the virtual meet scoring below, but--at least for the moment--that might be a little deceptive until you note that Teryn Kayser is listed as scoring in seven events. It would be a little difficult for Kayser to compete in all of those events at state. As was the case this spring, Kayser and the Mountainair coaches will have to make some event choices. And when those choices are made, Mountainair will have to find some more points to sustain the title chase. Thrower Shawnee Romero and jumper Taylor Gikas appear most likely to contribute those points, but the Mustangs will need relays to contribute as well.

Jal appears to be bringing the deepest team to the table next spring. Multi-talented individuals Baylie McDonald and Kayla Montez promise to produce some high-end points in sprints, hurdles, jumps, and pole vault. Jal's relays produced very nicely at state this year and the numbers should be in place to produce a similarly high-scoring set in 2014. Ayanna Lujan, Danica Abeyta, and Morgan Hiebert, among others, will be looking to add some points in individual events. At this point, it would appear that 2014 should be a very good year to be a Panther.

Fort Sumner faces the daunting task of replacing Ashley Landreth and Lanay Crenshaw. Orianna Ortiz appears to be the heir apparent in the sprints, and a younger Landreth, McKayla, seems will primed to take over where Ashley left off. There are no bare cupboards in the Fort Sumner kitchen. Relays are traditionally a big part of the picture for Fort Sumner. Figure nothing about that changes for 2014. Paris Allred, Johni West, and Ariana Lucero were key relay pieces for Fort Sumner this sprint and each figures to be back next spring.

In addition to these three teams, keep an eye on Desert Academy and Jemez Valley for 2014. Desert Academy's Taylor Bacon and Jemez Valley's Jazmine Chosa are the kind of athletes who can almost single-handedly keep a team in a meet. Both schools have some additional individuals who figure to score state points. What isn't as clear for Jemez Valley or Desert Academy is whether or not these teams will be able to produce in relays. If the relays come together in a substantial sort of way for either of these teams, they immediately vault into a position to challege for a state team title.
