Crystal Ball Gazing: 1A Boys

Breaking down the prospects for New Mexico Track and Field 2012

Early indications are that 1A boys may become the tightest state title race in any classification this spring.

Picking up this series where we left off last week, look for some good competition among the 1A boys heavyweights. Clovis Christian, Jal, Cliff, and Fort Sumner are each bringing enough talent to the table to make a serious bid for the state title. Much could depend on who stays healthy and who finds that extra piece or two that makes the difference between a contender and one who wears the crown.

Interestingly, teams from the southeastern quadrant of NM seem to have the upper hand going in. These teams figure to see each other a few times during the season, making comparisons of strengths and weaknesses between them relatively easy as the season moves along. Cliff, however, could come into the state meet as something of a wild card from that perspective.

As usual, this analysis omits relays, isn't scored according to the conventions of New Mexico state track and field, and relies on a limited set of data from last year. But, it's as good of a start as any in trying to get an early look at which teams to keep an eye on as the season starts up.
