Meet Recap: Clint ISD Invitational

The Clint ISD Invitational, held at the Horizon Golf Course, drew in El Paso's most talented runners. The meet featured every school in the city, except Eastwood who choose not to compete. The invitational only show cased an elite girls and elite men's race.

This week junior Liam Walsh of El Paso Coronado was upset by San Elizario's freshman, Edwin Gomez. Gomez covered the course in 16:40.41 to claim first place. Walsh closed in hard the last thousand meters to make up a lot of ground on Gomez but Welsh was only able to secure second in 17:01.64.

With Gomez's first place finish and two other top ten finishes, the Eagles claimed the team title as well. Senior David Ceballos and Sophomore Rene Arambula, placing ninth and tenth place respectively. In total the Eagles scored 55 points, with Coronado High School in second with 83 points and Franklin High School in third with 110 points.


Eva Jess once again claimed the individual title continuing her undefeated freshman cross country season. In her normal strategy she took the lead from the gun and never gave it up. Jess finished the race in 19:13.28, which was thirty-four seconds faster than junior Jannelle Jaeger- Darakjy from Coronado. Darakjy ran 19:47.53 to finish in second. With district less than a week away, will Darakjy be able to close the gap between her and Jess for an upset over the district title?

Ultimately the meet was won by Alamogordo High School who was led by the top ten finishes of freshman Gabriella Sandoval and junior Sheyenne Drake. Sandoval finished in ninth place with a 21:27.17 and Drake finished tenth in 21:39.88. Alamogordo scored 58 points, followed by Coronado in 68 points for second, and Franklin in third place with 84 points.
