Top 7 Athletes To Watch At The Queen Track Classic

The Queen Track Classic, named after Henrico Hermitage (Va.) High graduate and Olympian Queen Harrison, is expected to be, in the former high school star's own words, "sweaty, muscular, fabulous."

Harrison's all-girls event will feature 20 events and take place on Friday, June 10, at Sports Backer Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. It will be streamed LIVE on MileSplit and the event will be sponsored exclusively with ASICS

Harrison, a former Virginia Tech University record holder, NCAA Champion and 2008 Olympian in the 400m hurdles who's currently ranked No. 7 in the IAAF in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.64, organized the all-girls track meet in response to what she felt was a lack of events that empowered young female athletes.

"I wanted to basically pass the baton to the next generation," Harrison told MileStat on April 23. "After talking with friends, fellow athletes, and family members to get their feedback and figure out if the guys would get mad at me since it was only for girls the idea was born."

Harrison hopes the niche event will blossom into something greater.

"Track is a coed sport, it works as a coed sport but I think looking at with a fresh pair of eyes is a good thing too," she said. "I don't want this type of meet to replace coed as the norm but think we should look at things differently at times and elevate some young ladies to get exposure to the highest level.

The meet will also award five girls with $1,000 scholarships to continue their athletic careers.
