The Rio Rancho Jamboree has been the largest invitational in the state of New Mexico since 2005 when the site of the NMAA State Cross Country Championships was moved from Gallup to Rio Rancho. Since 2005 the meet has grown from 32 schools to 93 schools that are participating this week. Because it is the site of the NMAA State Championships the Rio Rancho Jamboree serves as a preview for most of the class team and individual championships that will be contested in November.
The current Rio Rancho High School cross country course has been unchanged since 2013 when the solar array was installed that summer. That led to the name change of that particular hill from "Depression" to "Solar Hill". While "Solar Hill" is the news hill on the course, "Deception" (the windy and sandy hill just past the mile point) is probably the most memorable part of the course. The hill is 275 meters long and at about 250 it gives the false impression that it is over (hence the deception). Below are the Course Records since 2013.

Small School Boys
The Mesa Vista Trojans have posted some fast times this season but they have also had some inconsistency in their line-up. If everyone is healthy and present on Saturday then they look like a solid favorite. Cuba High School is a strong contender for this race as well. They do not have impressive times but that is because they have been running on some tough courses. Cottonwood Classical Prep can run with anyone in this field through 4 runners but they will need their 5th man to step up if they want to contend. Other teams to watch include: Navajo Pine, Santa Fe Prep, Jemez Valley and Desert Academy. Individually this is a confusing call because most of these runners have not run head to head. This race usually strings out early with the race being decided in the first mile.
Small School Boys Individuals
Andrew Archuleta, Maxwell: 16:37 3 mile PR at Northern New Mexico XC Championship and last year finished 5th in this race.
D'Angelo Herrera-10 Cuba: 17:44 5k PR and top 5 finish at the Chamiso Invite
Jeremy Archuleta, Maxwell: 16:57 3 mile PR at Northern New Mexico XC Championship
Sundeep Taniguchi, Mesa Vista: 16:58 3 mile PR at Northern New Mexico XC Championship
Colin Pena-11 Cottonwood Classical:17:41 5k PR UNM Lobo Invite
Tomas Gurule, Penasco: 17:11 3 mile PR at Norther New Mexico XC Championship
Jace Tharpe-10 NACA: 17:15 3 mile PR at Norther New Mexico XC Championship
Other Athletes to Watch:
Tyler Gibson-11 Cottonwood Classical
Alex Kellam-12 Desert Academy
Angelo Aragon-Sandoval-11 Cuba
Gabe Padilla-10 Moutainair
Anthony Vigil-11 Mesa Vista
Small School Girls
Cottonwood Classical Prep looks like the class of this field. They have enough talent to place up to 6 runners in the top 20. Santa Fe Prep and Navajo Pine will give chase but they do not have the front runners in their pack compared to Cottonwood. Other teams to watch include: Estancia, Jemez Valley, Penasco, Academy for Technology and the Classics, Native American Community Academy, Newcomb and Crownpoint. Individually expect Jaimey Fastnacht to run away from the crowd early. The is the favorite here and she will be the favorite to win the 3A championship in November. Rhylyn Jones and Corminda Henry should both have aspirations of finishing in the top 10 at State in 3A and they will get valuable course experience in the Small School Race. Carly Gonzales of Penasco is the early favorite in the 1-2A division but she may have trouble cracking the top 10 in this race.
Small School Girls Individuals
Jaimey Fastnacht-Estancia: 20:46 5k PR at Los Lunas. 5 top 5 finishes in 2016. 3rd place in 3A in 2015.
Rhylyn Jones-11 Cottonwood: 21:59 5k PR. 4 top 10 finishes in 2016. 19:46 5k PR at Nike SW in 2015.
Corminda Henry-12 Newcomb: 21:43 5k PR. 4th in 3A in 2014
Ariel Pena-9 Cottonwood: 22:24 5k PR. 2nd place at Chamiso Invite.
Anna Swanson, Santa Fe Prep: 22:34 5k PR
Lia Kane-12 Desert Academy: 21:05 at State in 2015. Top 10 at State and at Small School Jamboree in 2015
Other Athletes to Watch:
Carly Gonzales-9 Penasco
Abrianna Griego-10 Mesa Vista
Autumn Landry, Moutainair
Kaitlyn Calhoon, Estancia
Jordan Louis, Navajo Pine
Savannah McCall, Santa Fe Prep
Aidyn Hesuse, Cottonwood Classical Prep
Large School Boys
Pinon High School from Arizona has posted some impressive times at the Desert Twilight meet and in some New Mexico races. They will be given the option of moving up to the Championship Division. If they don't expect them to run away with the large school championship on the backs of their top 3 runners. Lovington and Del Norte should stage an epic battle. Lovington has an excellent pack but they lack front runners. Del Norte has two strong runners up front but they need more support. West Las Vegas would also figure in the mix but their top runner Moises Coca is racing in the Championship race so the shorthanded Dons team score will suffer. Other teams to watch include Robertson, Centennial, Farmington, Los Lunas, Manzano, Santa Fe High and Bosque. Tyrin Begay, Wesly Cook and Adriano Joe have all posted the fastest time in this group but they did this at low altitude at the super quick Desert Twilight Course in Casa Grande. Levi Shije's performance at Academy proves that he can run fast on a tough course and he should challenge for the top spot. Ruben Gonzales of Centennial should also figure in the mix.
Large School Boys Individuals
Tyrin Begay-12 Pinon: 16:07 5k PR at Twilight Invite. 4 top 10 finishes this year.
Wesley Cook-12 Pinon: 16:20 5k PR at Twilight Invite. 5 top 10 finishes this year.
Adriano Joe-12 Pinon: 16:25 5k PR at Twilight Invite. 4 top 10 finishes this year.
Levi Shije-11 Sandia Prep: 16:54 at Academy. Top 10 at SFIS Invite.
Ruben Gonzalez-11 Centennial: sub 2:00 800m runner. 16:13 for 3miles at Onate.
Isaiah Mejia-12 Del Norte: 17:11 5k at Highland Invite
Other Athletes to Watch:
Tone ONsae-10 Sandia Prep
Matt Weinstein-12 Hope
Micah Carlen-10 Manzano
Josh Valdez-10 Robertson
Abran Lujan, Valley
Ronson Begay, Del Norte
Large School Girls
This could be one of the best team battles of the day with 5 schools having a shot to win. Lovington High School has 4 very strong runners but the position of their 5th runners gives the other schools a chance. Grants and Centennial are both balanced teams who's #5 runner will be close coming down the stretch. Espanola has the best pack in the field but their lack of a front runner may hurt them. Other teams to watch include Los Lunas, Valley (Sanders), Thoreau, Wingate, Del Norte, Atrisco Heritage and West Mesa. Individually you can also expect a close race. Malena Espinoza ran an excellent 2nd place to Jacque Pinon at the La Cueva Meet showing that she can run well on a tough high altitude course. Marrisa Gallegos hasn't had the opportunity to run up front this year as Atrisco has attended some tough meets. It will be interesting to see how Gallegos does at the front of the pack. Catherine Taylor is the only runner to post a sub 20:00 time but she did it on a 3 mile course in Onate. Regardless of the course distance Taylor should be in the top pack giving her a chance to win.
Large School Girls Individuals
Malena Espinoza, Lovington: 20:11 5k at La Cueva.
Marissa Gallegos, Atrisco: 20:21 at Metro Championship
Catherine Taylor, Centennial: 19:55 3mile at Onate. 5 top 10 finishes.
Nizhoni James, Valley (Sanders): 20:44 5k at Twilight Invite. Top 10 at Zuni and Wingate.
McKinzey Allee, Farmington: 20:59 5k at Shiprock and Joe Vigil Invite.
Precious Robinson, Pinon: 21:25 5k at Twilight Invite. 4 top 10 finishes this year.
Ginger Wright, Grants: 21:31 5k at Academy.
Other Athletes to Watch:
Marissa Weldon, Los Lunas
Raquel Chavez, Valencia
Elizabeth Beltran, Valencia
Edit Herrera, Lovington
Sylar Jones, Cobre
Championship Boys
There will be great battles throughout this race as it serves as a preview for the 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A championships. Albuquerque Academy and Hobbs High School are both undefeated in New Mexico this year. Up until last week the Academy Chargers have been making short work of the teams that they have faced in the Albuquerque metro area. Hobbs has been running wild in southern New Mexico but their most impressive performance came in Texas at the Odessa Invite. Cleveland High School was narrowly defeated by Academy at the Albuquerque Metro Championships last week. Cleveland has stepped up and they now expect to contend for a 6A championship in November. Earlier in the year Eldorado looked like a lock for a top 3 finish at state in the 6A division but the Eagles are not deep and last week they suffered an injury that exposed their lack of depth. Volcano Vista had an excellent Metro Championship which puts them in contention in 6A and at this meet. The home team Rio Rancho has been inconsistent this year but they are a talented team and a bit of home cooking could jump start their season. The battle for 3A and 4A will take place further down the line. In 3A Zuni, Laguna Acoma and Pecos will battle for the right to be called the favorite. In 4A look for East Mountain, Pojoaque and St. Michael's to have a close race. Individually there are a handful of runners with a shot at winning. Andrew Bosquez should be considered the favorite since he has run faster on this course compared to the rest of the field and he is the reigning Gatorade Runner of the Year in New Mexico. Kashon Harrison has not lost a cross country race since the state championships last fall. His most impressive win was his dismantling of the field at the UNM Lobo Invite. Jordan Lesanse had posted some of the most impressive performances this season but last week he was upended by a rising Jericho Cleveland who is much improved compared to last year. The defending champion of this race is Devin Paredes who has been on the charge of late and if he continues to improve he could have a shot at the individual win.
Championship Boys Individuals
Andrew Bosquez, Hobbs: Reigning Gatorade Runner of the Year in New Mexico. 2015 6A State Champion, 3mile of 15:12 for his 2016 season's best at Odessa.
Kashon Harrison, Kirtland Central: Undefeated in 2016 5k PR of 15:26 at Shiprock. Defeated most of the field at the UNM invite.
Jericho Cleveland, Volcano Vista: 3 mile PR of 15:20 at Metro Championship and 4 other sub 16 minute performances this year.
Jordan Lesansee, Academy: 5A 1600m State Champ in 2016. 9:16 3200m PR. 5k PR and course record 15:10 at Albuquerque Academy Invitational.
Devin Paredes, Rio Rancho: Defending champion of the Rio Rancho Jamboree. 6A 3200m State Champion in 2016. 3 mile season's best of 15:39
Thomas Salas, Onate: 6A 3200m State Champion in 2015. 5k season's best of 15:42
Other Athletes to Watch:
Victor Saldana, Hobbs
Connor Laktasic, Eldorado
Jesse Madrid, Hobbs
Nicholas Jameson, Miyamura
Mark Harrington, Academy
David Apodoca, Cleveland
Championship Girls
The Rio Rancho High School Rams have had an impressive season this year which makes them the favorites to win this race. They have had 4 different runners take the top spot for their team this year which shows their depth and speed. Albuquerque Academy, Cleveland and Eldorado have traded victories against each other this season. For each squad they will need their depth (#3-#5 runners) to step up at this race as the entire field is talented. Last week at the Metro Championships, Volcano Vista showed that they are much improved. Taos High School is the class of the 4A division and if they have all of their runners (Taos has a history of sharing runners with the soccer team) they could contend for a top 3 spot. Shiprock High School is the next best 4A squad. Three of the top 4 teams in 3A are also in this race. On paper Laguna Acoma looks like the class of the field but Navajo Prep, Pecos and Zuni have all been improving steadily and they will contend with the Hawks. Individually it is Amanda Mayoral's race to win. The junior was New Mexico's only nationals (NXN) qualifier in 2015 and she hasn't lost a race in New Mexico since 2014. This year she has looked vulnerable but most people believe that she is running just hard enough to win. That is understandable considering her efficient stride and calm demeanor. In 2016 her closest competitor has been Jasmine Turtle-Morales who came within 2 seconds of Mayoral at the Academy Invite. Three Rio Rancho Rams (Andi Almodovar, Molly Klein and Reina Paredes) had a shot at Mayoral with 400m to go at the Metro Championship before she pulled away. No one should count out Mitzy Madrid of Hobbs who just posted an impressive 18:36 at Odessa. She is on the rise and should be in the lead pack.
Championship Girls Individuals
Amanda Mayoral, Cleveland: Reigning Gatorade Runner of the Year in New Mexico. Defending Champ of 6A and Rio Rancho Jamboree. Unbeaten in cross country in New Mexico since 2014. 3-mile season's best of 18:38.
Jasmin Turtle-Morales, Eldorado: 18:24 5k PR was close 2nd to Mayoral at Albuquerque Academy Invite.
Andi Almodovar, Rio Rancho: 18:47 5k Season's Best. 2nd to Mayoral at Metro.
Molly Klein, Rio Rancho: 18:35 5k Season's best. 3 top 5 finishes this year.
Isabella Schrader, Volcano Vista: 18:47 5k PR at Albuquerque Academy
Reina Paredes, Rio Rancho: 19:02 5k Season's best. Rio Rancho's #1 3 times this year.
Alliana Atencio, Rio Rancho:18:47 5k PR at Rio Rancho Invite. 2nd to Mayoral at Highland Invite.
Mitzy Madrid, Hobbs: 18:36 3 mile PR at Odessa.
