Coburn Smashes 2000 Steeple Meet Record at GSW

In what could be just the begining of a very strong performance from the Colorado contingent, Emma Coburn (Crested Butte Community School) shaved 11 seconds off the Great Southwest meet record to win the women's 2000 steeplechase today.

Coburn edged Natalie Haws of Davis HS (Utah) by four seconds to claim her second straight Great Southwest steeple crown. Coburn's winning time was 7:00.51, almost four seconds ahead of Haws.

In other action completed on Day 2 of the GSW meet, Mike McPherson of Chaparral finished sixth in the decathlon with a total score of 6069. Curtis Leach of New Mexico ran away with the event with a score of 7262. Will Maher of Legacy HS finished fifteenth with a score of 4167, but finished nicely with a 4:43.54 1500.

Kody Leach of Greeley West HS finished 13th in the boys' 2000 steeplechase, finishing in 6:59.41.

Next to Coburn, the best finish of the day for a Colorado competitor was Brianne Beemer's fifth-place finish in the girls' heptathlon. Beemer closed out the competition with a win and a meet record in the heptathlon 800, breaking the finish line in 2:16.20.

More results to follow later in the weekend.
